Possible PSA choices?

VAN HALEN -
UP FOR BREAKFAST

Well!
She treat me like a personal Jesus
Got the hand...put it where its gonna heal ya
Got the finger...put it right there on the trigger
Well, pump it up, pump it up
Baby make it bigger

Well... I'm Going crazy
Pumping it up, pumping it up
(ewww ohhh ya)
It's gonna heal ya

She put the cream in my coffee (first thing in the morning)
Put that butter on my biscuit (honeydew my melons)
Cherries on bananas (gonna need a second helpin')
You know I'm up for breakfast so early in the morning

Lock the front ...Leave the back door open
Hot tub loosen up ...baby been soaking
Been tokin'...been sippin'
Slip slide slippin' ... all got me tripping

Well... I'm Going crazy
Keeping it up... pumping it up, pumping it up
Ain't gonna kill ya

She put the cream in my coffee (first thing in the morning)
Spread that butter on my biscuit (honeydew my melon)
Put berries on bananas (I need a second helping)
That's why I'm up for breakfast so early in the morning

Wake me up babe
Hold me up, wake me up... Gotta get up, gotta get up, gotta get up, gotta get up.

She put the cream in my coffee (first thing in the morning)

That's why I'm up for breakfast so early in the morning

Gotta get up, Gotta get up
Hot coffee first thing in the morning

To start off, I'm a hardcore classic rock fan, it's all about Van Halen, Motley Crue, Kiss, AC/DC etc.......so it's not a surprise that the first thing I thought of was a set of song lyrics as a paper topic. This song is a good rock song, and it's one of those songs where the singer uses food as a metaphor for love/sex, as discussed in Thursday's class. It's always kind of entertaining to see how many metaphors that artists can come up with to reference sex, without actually saying anything explicitly. This is one such song, and I found it interesting the choices of foods that Sammy Hagar (the lead singer) chose....ones that aren't commonly associated with love/sex/romance etc. Coffee, honeydew melon, bacon, biscuits? These choices are unique, and a little more creative.

I just recently watched Saving Private Ryan, which in my opinion is the best war film of all time, and after being assigned this blog, a particular scene jumped out at me from this movie. It's very short, but I believe it's very powerful at the same time. If you or I were to see coffee being poured or a sandwich sitting on a table, we wouldn't think anything of it. We would simply keep moving right along, or possibly decide to get ourselves a cup of coffee or a sandwich. However, if you're in a situation where "normal" everyday food is hard to come by, those types of foods suddenly take on a whole new meaning and importance. The way Tom Hanks (the actor in the clip) just stares blankly at the food he is seeing is very telling of how strange and exotic everyday food can become when people are put in survival states of mind, such as in times of war.

  1. First of all, I really like both choices. Both are very different and original. The song has a lot of allusions towards foods/sex which I think could be intresting to study and anyalze. But you also make a great point out of the Saving Private Ryan, when you described food as being over looked in "normal" situations, but given when food is not readily available to you it is looked on more. I really like that reference. I am more of a visual person, so I would think the clip is better, but honestly both sound great!

  2. I absolutely love that Van Halen song so I'm biased in this case! I think it'd be very interesting dissecting the song and analyzing it's many metaphors for sex. I also believe you'd catch the attention of many of our peers with that topic. The second of your sources is very different and that drew me to it. You have many doors of opportunity with that clip and the chance to research how survival and war change how individuals view food and indulgence. I support both of your choices and look forward to your paper!

  3. Either of these sources would be great to work with. I agree that "Saving Private Ryan" is one of the best movies made, and like you said the clip shows how the view of food can change in certain settings. The Van Halen song is a good way to show how food can have different interpretations and symbolic meaning for different people.

  4. I love both of your sources and think that either of them would work well, but I'm particularly drawn to the Saving Private Ryan clip. I think you could write a really compelling analytical research paper about food and war, using this clip as your basis. Like you say, it's being used to show how these everyday, normal activities are suddenly weird and alien when they're happening on the battlefield, which makes a powerful point about the nature of war itself. It also shows the importance of provisioning to battle. As the old saying goes, an army marches on its stomach.

  5. I think both would work very well. The Van Halen song would definitely be an easy choice just because there is soo much in it to interpret and there is probably alot of info online about it as well.
